New Sprint Service Plans Coming

June 11, 2008 in Sprint

On the 15th, Sprint will be making a bunch of changes to their service plans. Consolidation of of Sprint and Nextel plans is one of the main features - shouldn’t they have done that awhile ago?

Anyways, we thought current Sprint customers and potential future Sprint customers might want a headstart on the info:

  • There will no longer be separate CDMA (Sprint) and iDen (Nextel) plans
  • Power Pack and Free Incoming plans are gonzo
  • Users can mix and match CDMA and iDen on the same plans (before you had to have separate accounts)
  • Single user lines start at 450 or 900 min for $39 and $59 respectively
  • Talk/Message/Connect gives unlimited messaging and Direct Connect (Walkie Talkie) but no data - $49.99 for 450 minutes, $69.99 for 900 minute or $89.99 for unlimited.
  • Everything Plans (include messaging and data) - $69 for 450 minutes, $89 for 900 minutes or $99 for unlimited minutes
  • Unlimited plans include navigation, TV and Direct Connect
  • Smartphone MUST be activated on a talk plan with a Vision Pro pack ($30) - or on an Everything plan
  • Share plans (aka Talk Share) start at $69.99 for two lines with 700 minutes - add a phone is $9.99 per to a max of 5 total phones on the line
  • The Talk/Message Share plans run $99.99 and $149.99 for 1500 and 3000 minutes and unlimited messaging, additional lines are also $9.99. Finally, the Talk/Message/Data Share plans run $129.99 or $169.99 for 1500 and 3000 minutes, unlimited messaging and data. Besides browsing, these plans include Sprint Navigation, Sprint TV and Sprint Radio. Additional lines can be added for $19.99 apiece.

  1. I read the price will triple for some folks on Sprint. How is Sprint going to keep customers by raising the price and making take the 69.00 plan? Here is what I found.

So the big rumor floating around the 'nets these days is that Sprint is set to increase the cost of PDA plans for all smartphones. More specifically, they will require you to sign up for one of their "Simply Everything" plans.

What does that mean? Currently, Sprint users can opt to pay a very reasonable $15 for basic "Power Vision" + Voice plan, which gives them just unlimited data over 3g ($20 and $25 plans include extras).

The "Simply Everything" plan starts at $69 but includes 450 minutes voice, data, text, e-mail, Web-surfing, Sprint TV, Sprint Music, GPS Navigation, Direct Connect and Group Connect (it goes up to $99 for unlimited voice). That's actually a very cool package and very competitive.

The rumor, however, is that anyone buying a new smartphone starting July 13th (that date sound familiar?) will be forced to activate the phone with the minimum $69 plan--even existing customers in contract. And SERO plans may be included as well (Read: What is SERO?).

    Yikes.

Unfortunately, there is precedent for this: the much hyped Samsung Instinct requires exactly such a plan, even under SERO.

For "new" customers to Sprint (we've heard they have a couple), these plans are actually quite attractive, but for current subscribers who have a better details...it's flat out scary (e.g. my cost after taxes would nearly triple).

What to do? Well, we'll just have to wait and see we suppose. It's still not clear if doing and ESN swap online will be affected, though it may just be, in which case signing that contract now and buying a new PDA full price won't even save you.

I don't think I will go to Spring!
  2. That's so shitty. Fortunately for you U.S. folks, you still pay a considerably lower cost for literally everything on your plans than us Canadians do. For example, my plan.. before I confused and sweet-talked was:

400 Anytime minutes (Unlimited Evenings and Weekends)
    1000 Incoming Minutes
    2500 Texts
    1GB Wireless Smartphone Data
    Call Display, Voicemail..

I was paying $30 for my voice plan, $32.00 in add-ons like the voicemail and call display and such, and $100.00 for my wireless data.. YES, $100.00! It's balls.

I somehow get all that now for $60.00 + Tax -- I'm awesome. Aaaaaand, my data's now UNLIMITED.

Basically you Americans still own us on pricing, and your networks are better. I pray for T-Mobile to come to Canada.. and they will.. just a matter of when.
