Sure, the iPhone 3G is cool. But the TRULY intriguing part of the latest Apple launch is the mobile applications, both free and paid, that unlock a world of possibilities previously unseen on mobile phones. We’re set to enter that world on Thursday, July 10th at 9am PST with the launch of the iPhone App Store.

Apparently, the 9AM launch time of the App Store coincides with the first hardware launch, taking place in New Zealand. And when the figurative pearly gates of the iPhone heavens open at by virtue of the App Store… fanboys will have immediate access to over 500 applications for their phone.

The number of applications are startling and whats more is 125 of them will be absolutely, hands down free. Part of the reason here is that Apple is allowing distribution of FREE applications that are subsidized by in application advertising - not bad. And while 25% of all launch day apps will be free, a whopping 90% will be less than $9.99!

Chances are if you’ve saved up enough to pluck down your dollars on a shiny new iPhone, you’ll have enough coin left over to buy your favorite application or two from the app store to give a test drive. And even if not, the hundred plus free ones should keep you occupied for a minute or two.

Some analysts - although perhaps riding a little high on the iPhone hope/hype - are saying the iPhone App Store alone could generate $1 Billion dollars in revenue. It won’t be too long before will learn a whole lot more about how much promise the App store will command. Apple takes a 30% cut of all iPhone application sales.
