Voyager Refresh: We’ve Got Details

by Rob on July 17th, 2008

The LG Voyager launched in November 2007 with much fanfare but talk about a 2nd generation of the consumer hit have been limited to speculative stretches. Until we learned about the Voyager Refresh and talk about the Full QWERTY, double-screened clamshell were, well… refreshed.

We already knew the LG Voyager Refresh would get Verizon’s new Visual Voicemail service - which is pretty cool. But we didn’t know much else, including whether the Refresh was simply a software update or a new piece of hardware.

A reliable source (who wishes to remain anonymous) gave us the low down and the Voyager Refresh will be an internal firmware update that Voyager owners need to take into Verizon stores to receive (its free).

Here are some of the highlights:

  • Will be update V10 (skipping a few Vs)
  • Adds Drag and Drop Icons on the homescreen like those on the LG Dare for Verizon
  • Adds copy and paste functionality
  • Adds drawing pad
  • Visual Voicemail option included

The Voyager Refresh will also see an update to the phone’s charger, providing an option for the USB/wall charger that comes bundled with the new Chocolate 3:

As you can see, there is a USB charger for the phone itself but instead of having a completely seperate wall charger, the USB connector fits INTO the wall unit, becoming your wall charger. Pretty nifty… not only does this cut down on your charger bulk but it probably cuts costs for Verizon/LG as well.

The Voyager Refresh will most likely be available in August, when Visual Voicemail is rolled out. The firmware update is free but, obviously, you’ll have to purchase the new charger. They will, however, be included in the new Voyagers for sale which will also see new packaging/marketing.

And another rumor you can file in the depths of your memory: Verizon and LG are hoping to launch a new hardware version of the Voyager which will be compatible with the upcoming 4G LTE network. While everything else in this article is probably spot-on, that last one should be taken pretty lightly.
