Verizon & Alltel Merger Moving Closer

November 2, 2008 in Alltel, Industry News, Verizon

The Department Of Justice all but confirmed Verizon’s purchase of Alltel, passing anti-trust approval provided VZW sell off certain assets to ensure healthy competition in specific markets. Unfortunately for Verizon, the selloffs would account for one of the biggest compliance concessions in the history of the Wireless industry.

Verizon would be forced to sell off 100 assets across 22 states resulting in a loss of 5 million subscribers. After all is said and done, Verizon would have 78 Million subscribers, still leap frogging AT&T for most subscribers in the United States. It looks like Verizon is making moves to fully comply with the DOJ so they can make that jump.

On November 4th, only a few days from now, the FCC will meet on the issue and they may add a few additional markets to the “must drop” list. Other than that, it looks like Verizontel is locked and loaded. We’ll keep you posted.
