Samsung Omnia… In The Eye Of The Storm

November 21, 2008 in Handsets, Samsung, Verizon

In the world of mobile technology, November 21st 2008 belonged to the BlackBerry Storm and Verizon Wireless. But while the Storm caused a ruckus in long lines across the nation, even forcing police to restore order in a NYC Verizon store, there may have been a calm in the day that nobody noticed. The Samsung Omnia at Verizon Wireless could carefully be brewing up an excited launch of its own.

Employee training on the Verizon Omnia started (supposedly) on November 15th but it seems that the devices may already be in stores, albeit not on display. Signs are pointing to a release right around the corner on this sweet device with a 5MP camera, 240 x 400 pixels touchscreen display, accelerometer, GPS, Wi-Fi and more.

Here are a few pics of Verizon’s Samsung Omnia captured in-store:

Was the BlackBerry Storm not your cup of tea? Perhaps the Samsung Omnia will float your boat. But no matter which one you prefer, or even if you prefer neither, you have to admit that Verizon is making a strong push for Santa’s holiday dollar with 2 awesome phones right before the thick of the holiday shopping begins.

At least we hope…. Come on Omnia!

  1. Well, let's put it this way - the Storm is really just a wet drizzle as far as I'm concerned.

I was one of the few to actually get one on 11/21/08. I hadn't even planned it - I just went to the local Verizon store to look at the display. Turns out, Fed Ex just delivered a few extras, so I got dibs on one and took the bait.

Ok, short of it. The click screen is nice, bright, and very clear. Touch sensing works ok. Decent battery life for what it is. Email worked ok, though I find the Blackberry O.S. more complicated than it NEEDS to be. However - I NEED a decent camera on my phone as I take pics on job sites and need to email them back to work quickly. In the past I was using a Samsung flipshot 3 megapixel cameraphone, but it's too hard to text on the regular keypad, so I thought the Storm would be a great all-in-one, since it touts it's 3MP autofocus camera as well.

Well - HERE is a crop (about half a full pic) taken with the Blackberry Storm's "wonderful" 3MP autofocus camera:

Yes. Really. Camera settings were set at maximum size/quality, focus was on, yadda yadda. I did everything right. Turns out, a few other new owners are also now starting to report issues with their cameras as well (with so far only one I've found that takes good pics). So. all focus MIGHT be on the Storm right now, but the glitches and booboos are going to come out as people start using their features. Then poof - it hits the fan.

So - back to the Omnia. 5 megapixels? Wow. Sounds great. It's what I need. But I'm letting you guys buy the first batch and report back on pic quality. I'm not brave enough to go through this again. The employees at my local Verizon are NOT nice people and I don't want to deal with them again with a return, so you all can be the guinea pigs on the Omnia before I get one. LOL
