Wireless Gadget Charging Demoed, Craved
| by Rob on January 8th, 2009 |
Let me explain something to you. I have 2 cell phones on 2 different service providers and at any given time at least one of my phones is usually dead. I hear endless complaints from the likes of my family, friends and girlfriend. And I deserve it.
No, no I don’t. It’s a pain in the butt to have to constantly be plugging stuff in here and there and everywhere and half the time either the wire or port gets worn out and you have to turn and bend your phone/charger in some obscure direction or it won’t charge. And should you accidentally alter that obscure direction a millimeter or two and pick up your phone a few hours later to head out? Sorry, 1 bar of battery left, social life over.
That’s the rant that I excercise internally almost every day and apparently the freaking geniuses at Fulton Innovations heard the turmoil in my soul. They created a battery that charges wirelessly!

What? How does that even make sense? All you have to do is set your phone or other gadget on the charging surface. Anywhere on the surface… just put it down. The battery has internal coils that pick up the charge. No more wires. No more hassles. No more irritation. No more uncharged batteries.

They demonstrated this with a modded iPhone and it worked like a charm. They also showed that the charging has some power behind it – they used it to power a 2kW blender all by its lonesome. The batteries are called ecoupled and that may sound like some kind of dating “find your soulmate” website but that’s okay… because I have fallen in love at first site.
All this is awesome, right? Well get excited because apparently, Fulton Innovation will soon be offering replacement batteries for your existing phones, allowing you to swap them out and start charging your phone wirelessly!
I’m not sure what the price of the battery or the surface unit is, but I’d be willing to pay quite a bit for this not-so-subtle convenience.
A couple questions we have:
- If you put mulitple devices on it will they still charge at the same rate?
- If there isn’t a device on the surface, will it be wasting energy/electricity and running up my utilities bill?
- kin i plz haz one k thx?
