10 Reasons The iPhone Sucks

by Rob on January 20th, 2009

I’m not an iPhone user so its hard (read:negligient) for me to comment on all of its deficiencies in day to day use. But BGR posted an article titled “10 things we hate about the iPhone” that does a really nice job summing up the device’s shortcomings.

They are summarized below but to read the full list with explanations, hit up the original post:

  1. Can’t use custom sounds
  2. No Copy/Paste
  3. Forwarding Email attachments wastes data
  4. Inbox for multiple email accounts sucks
  5. No video recording
  6. Camera button sucks
  7. Can’t FWD TXTs
  8. Recent Call Deleting
  9. No file structure access
  10. Background notification MIA

Anything YOU would put on the list that isn’t found here?

Can’t use custom sounds (yes you can)
    No Copy/Paste (true)
Forwarding Email attachments wastes data (no, unlimited data plan)
Inbox for multiple email accounts sucks (not really)
No video recording (yes there is)
Camera button sucks (could be better)
    Can’t FWD TXTs (true)
Recent Call Deleting (yes you can)
No file structure access (yes there is)
Background notification MIA (no background tasks allowed)

    - this list kinda sucks…

the number one gripe people have on the iphone is there is no MMS and no multitasking

    plus, it’s an apple product

a jailbroken phone lets you do all sorts of things to it such as more than half this list… you can theme it, change images, icons, file access, search, etc… there is also a program that lets you browse your entire iphone – all directorys, /, /root, /usr, /var, etc…

if you want a very good list to read check out http://pleasefixtheiphone.com/problems/index/

doesn’t let you delete one single call or a single text without clearing everything gets people in alot of trouble

    - Requires one or many more key pushes than most other phones to do incredibly simple things.

    - Slow as molasses.

    - Can’t delete all emails.

    - One of the crappiest “keypads” in existence. Hardware is better for this, not touchscreen. Period.

    - Crappiest call quality in existence.

    - Illogically designed software. My old Verizon cheap clamshell was way easier and logical to use.

    - Has legions of completely brainwashed fanboys who worship at the altar of Apple even though they continually release crappy product after product.

  4. 4. leavenworth wrote on May 26, 2009

    Oh yeah, I forgot:

    - No dedicated buttons or dock with actual call/hang-up buttons. You have to use the iPhone as a phone to realize how crappy this is.

I love when lists like this come out and someone says “my old flip phone does this and that”

OK that may be true, however, can we make a list of what the iphone CAN do better than your old phone. I think that would be a long list.

People will find anything to complain about theres a reason the iphone is “the phone to beat” not for the fun of it, it’s because it performs. There are some down sides obviously cut/paste, mms, multi-running programs, alot of this will be handled in the OS Upgrade, then what is there to complain about? I’m sure people will find something.

Also I sometimes wonder if these lists are made by non-iphone users for example:

    Can’t use custom sounds
(ringtones you can, but other stuff this is true)

    No Copy/Paste
    (Coming in JUNE)

    Forwarding Email attachments wastes data
(Wastes Data? The only plan for the iphone data is $30 Unlimited, you should be worried about “wasting data”)

Inbox for multiple email accounts sucks
    (Works fine for me)

    No video recording
    (Possibly coming in JUNE)

    Camera button sucks
(I’d take an actually button for camera but the button thats there works)

    Can’t FWD TXTs
    (Coming in JUNE)

    Recent Call Deleting
(You really need to delete specific numbers? Who you hiding specific calls from? lol)

    No file structure access
    (yes it does)

    Background notification MIA
(true, but doesnt clog-up like windows mobile)

There are obviously things I’d like to have on the iphone
example: themes, search through emails/txts, mms, a2dp, maybe folder creating to put all games into etc, sideways keyboad, etc. Most of this will be covered in the OS 3.0 however and none of it is a make-or-break feature.

    That’s just my opinion though.

  6. 6. Sevenace wrote on May 29, 2009

should NOT be worried about wasting data***

  7. 7. 30+ Days into my Contract :( wrote on June 22, 2009

Yeah it’s too bad my 30 day “trial” period is over, i think I’d take it back and get either the new one GS, or go back to my MotoQ or a nice Blackberry. There is no doubt the iPhone is “nice,” but really, that is ALL it really is. It looks beautiful just like all the other CRAP Apple makes, but for a guy like me, it feels like you are trapped inside a box with no OPTIONS for anything. “Got an APP for that,” my ass. They dont even have the BASIC things a “smart phone” is supposed to have. MMS is STILL not available through the update, “late summer,” and Customization features are non-existant. Out of the box the iPhone is CRAP. In order for you to have anything useful on it, you need to download a bunch of APPs, and for the most part, the useful ones are free. I’ve already bought 5, as for the Free ones, only a handful are worth the bandwidth.

There are a few things I will say positive about it, the speeds are acceptable to me, and so is the email feature. Also the camera on the 3g is very good IMO, (it adjusts exposure etc very well) and takes excellent pictures for an iPhone. The sound is good also.

As far as features and options, it FAILS. You fools that are going to buy the new iPhone are going to get ripped off, just because it can do “video.” Big deal, it shoulda been able to do that years ago! That is why they did not release an option for that on the 3G, and that is why also the MMS option is coming “late summer,” they wanted to rake in more cash for the new iPhone.

Its a piece of crap for business that’s for sure. Many other phones come with way more apps and options for business, and the battery lasts longer too lol, iPhones battery dies too damn fast, you’d think it’d last longer considering it HAS TO display pretty animations and sounds for everything.

    /rant it sucks.

  8. 8. iphoneuserslikeshinnythings wrote on June 23, 2009

Sevenace, ah another apple fanboy that needs to justify why they pissed away way too much money on the most over ratted phone ever! I love how all these standard features that every other crappy phone has, and your response is oh wait till June (maybe). Seriously if you spend this much money you should expect better! Saying that the iphone does this or that better is asinine. Apple did not create ANYTHING NEW. All they did was put a novel interface that people are overly impressed by.

    @aman
Guess you haven’t seen much yet. Are you 12? 14?
Go and have some time with even some fair oldies from Nokia, such as N95-4 and E90 running S60v3 and you’ll see how iPhone WAS ALREADY BEATEN before it even got released…

  11. 11. Jo wrote on July 11, 2009

I’m not 12 or 14 and really do like my iphone. probably the best phone i’ve ever had. HOWEVER, without the cynical comments, (totally unnecessary, and not to mention rather childish), the capability to remove a single call from the recents list seems to be a very simple application that Apple should offer for whatever reason the consumer deems it necessary. In that aspect, yes, they are rather archaic and it’s something that needs to be offered. does anyone know anything other than downloading the mobileLog 3.0?

  12. 12. sondra l wrote on July 12, 2009

I bought the ipod touch thinking it would be THE BEST mp3 player ever and was VERY disappointed with it AND apple’s customer service…they didn’t stand behind the product so there was no chance in hell I would dare purchase the iphone. Strategic marketing has kept it afloat along with ignorance from most people on the fact that there are MUCH better devices available than the iphone…looks great but doesn’t deliver. Don’t know if they have changed this or not but the one thing that was a huge deal breaker for me on the ipod touch was that I had to sync to the computer before I could delete anything! HELLO!!! the most basic function known to any portable device was unavailable on supposedly THE BEST mp3 player??? Apple, I am sorry to say will have to do much better than pretty pictures to win over tech savvy consumers. One bad apple definitely spoils the bunch for me!!!!!

  13. 13. Kamran wrote on July 13, 2009

Apart from the above mentioned, here are a few others:

    - No Java support, so can’t run java apps/games
    - Has to get stuff from app store
    - No USB port, so can’t connect to computer/laptop
    - Can’t play open source codecs like ogg.
    - etc etc.

I think it is just a monopolized fancy brick. And Apple thinks that all the users are dumb so don’t need much flexibility. It is just “in” to have iphone in some social circles and Apple is just ripping them off.

It is better to buy something more feature rich and that gives the user enough flexibility and control.

I have owned an Apple iCrap since they came out.

I did something I rarely do, which is purchase something without touching / looking / reading about it before hand. < Yes that day I was an idiot. I have completely hated this phone since I bought it. The Shortcomings are incredible. Not only did apple not tell the truth about this device, they blatantly lied about it, talking about what it’s future uses can be today. As if they could do this and that, when they had no plan to do it for two years. It is so very convenient that after two years Oh Look why don’t we give you text messaging that you can send pictures in? Great jobs,, my effin sliver could do that 4 years ago.

I will tell you this though, I took myself to a local shop, and bought myself another phone today. I can hear people. They can hear me… That is completely in the cool. Another thing I received a text with a picture in it! I didn’t have to spend thirty minutes converting mp3s to special formats so I could have a ring tone, and it does all this stuff, the same stuff the i phone did, for 40 dollars less a month? Oh Im so in :) its called an android, and apple could learn to use functionality over form. That is the reality of it. I work in IT, I need a smart phone that isn’t an idiot. Granted After two years the iCrap is where it should have been on release day, and the whole thing of if you want to use other features you have to buy them turns me slick off. The phone should already do these things guys / gals come on Stand UP for yourselves. As far as any ‘childish’ remarks made, the only reason we toast it so much fanboys is this, we bought in when we should have just got a blackberry or palm. The features were already in place by so many others, and offered more than the iphone. My mistake was to think that Apple a well known company would listen to it’s users and fix the problems we listed, begged, pleaded for. And before you say it will be fixed next june, It shouldn’t have been broke in the first place.

  16. 16. Brian wrote on August 3, 2009

I agree, the Iphone is a POS. Fanboy’s sure like to rant and rave about it and how cool it is. The problem is this is suposed to be a phone, the phone interface sucks, the alarms on it suck, the volume is for crap, Itunes is the WORST MP3 app out there ever. I understand if you were on the computer short bus your whole life how you would think this is so cool, but for people who have a clue this is just a fancy game system that just happens to recive calls every now and then, when your battery isnt drained in under 3 hours of dinking with this POS. Back to Windows Mobile for me.

My sister got an iphone for her birthday. a month and a half later it had a cracked screen from a drop on a PILLOW and apple said “user damage is not covered by the warrenty”. my mom took it back to the shop and they said it would cost $125.90 to get it fixed plus it would void the warrrenty. she now has a blackberry pearl.

Researchers have discovered a flaw within Apple’s iPhone SMS feature, an exploit that could allow a hacker access to your iPhone, disabling it and rendering it utterly useless. The exploit was publicized today at Black Hat cybersecurity conference in Las Vegas today.

Cybersecurity researchers Charlie Miller and Collin Mulliner discovered how they can disable any iPhone via a simple SMS. The exploit sent consumers into pandemonium, questioning if they should shut off their iPhone’s as of Thursday, when the exploit was demonstrated and documented to the public. The exploit shows up on the victims device as a single square character.

Here’s the big two iPhone killers for me:

virtual keyboard– it sucks, and everybody who says you get used to it is fooling themselves. You just can’t type as fast as with a physical keyboard (even in landscape), and if you try, you make an ungodly number of typos.

no multitasking– it pains me every time i have to wait for evernote to boot up just to type a quick note. and no pandora in the background? good news, soon you won’t be able to run spotify in the background! this just cripples the experience.

the iphone used to be the best phone out there, but the next generation of android phones is going to leave it in the dust.

All you people have to think, why do people love this device and why do they sell more and more of them. This is not a political left wing conspiracy it is a private sector advancement tool. I hope you can figure that out without reading to much into it!! Anyone not using this device to advance their careers or progress in life is without any hope. I guess you could always hold out for that hope and change from Obama.

Yes the iPhone really sucks. The least thing that is expected out of any phone is the ability to make & receive quality calls. Hope everybody agrees with me on that. Does the stupid iPhone is able to do that? No I own iPhone 3G and I know atleast 10 people who are using all versions of this crap(iPhone) and all of them complained about the call quality. There are drops, not able to hear other person or there is too much echo, and much more. These people are living where AT&T’s signal strength is really good it’s not the signal it is the phone. I can say that boldly coz my wife got a Nokia and she don’t have any problems with calls. Also there are other weird problems with iPhone. Let’s say someone calls you they hear the ring tone but iPhone is not really ringing (it’s not in silent mode) and there is no entry in the missed call list either. voice mails are delayed as late as 18 hrs. AT&Ts 3G network sucks (Nations fastest 3G network… I wud call that absolute nonsense).I was never able to browse maps.google, com properly with 3G. It works when iPhone is connected to wifi. iPhone is not compatible with most of the blutooth headsets out there in the market. I have 2 bluetooth headset’s and both doesn’t work with iPhone and the problems with iPhone are endless. I don’t think I can list them all here. I donno y there is so much hype to iPhone or any crappy product from apple for that matter. Think about it all those idiotic fans of Apple y do u exaggerate all crappy products from Apple? I also got an iPod which again sucks and the bloody iTunes I hate it. I’m yet to try the Mac. I would assume that will be yet another scrap from Apple. I just calculated the amount I’m paying for iPhone it is $200+tax+(720 for the data plan for 2 years). I was forced to go for the data plan otherwise I don’t need that. Doesn’t that sound’s crazy???? Adding to that I have to turn off 3G due to worst call quality, it’s better on EDGE. Now does iPhone worth that? absolutely not I spent that much money and I don’t even have a phone with good call qualtiy. What’s the point in spending huge amount of money????? Apple and it’s great fan’s will have to answer this question.

Last Sept 2008, the over-hyped and over-priced iPhone 3G came out. Coincidentally, my contract with my local Telco in Singapore also expired, so I need to renew my contract and I have the option to upgrade my phone. I was an HTC user before (S730 using WinMobile 5). A lot of my colleagues are Fanboys and they all convinced me to upgrade to the iPhone. I was about to sign the new contract for the new iPhone without testing it when I saw an “all black and devilishly looking” phone being displayed on the bottom part of the glass shelf. It was the HTC Touch Pro. Slightly cheaper than the iPhone. Being an HTC user before, I asked the attendant to get it for me and I will compare with the iPhone. I was blown away with its features (WinMo 6.1)… I turned on the iPhone and I was totally disgusted by it. My old Nokia N80i and my HTC S730 has more functions than this overrated, overpriced, overhyped BRICK! Making the story short, I bought the HTC Touch Pro. This Touch Pro packs more power and functions than the iPhone could ever imagine. I recently upgraded it to WinMo 6.5 by EnergyROM and I was totally impressed by the added functions and features. iPhone is comparable to a stereotypical dumb blonde. Beatiful, but empty inside. Ladies and gentlemen, Apple is screwing you… BIGTIME!

  27. 27. TriXteR wrote on December 9, 2009

And by the way… iPhone 3GS also came out in the middle of this year… My upgraded HTC Touch Pro is still more powerful than the new Apple “i-Brick 3GS” that came out. After my contract expires again, I will exclusively upgrade to HTC Hero or the new HTC Touch Pro 2.

  28. 28. Zane wrote on December 15, 2009

NOT an iPhone user and you think you get to complain?
You’re completely lacking in credibility, and completely misinformed.

    Now here’s some REAL problems:

    1. Camera can’t zoom, and the picture viewer is motion sensitive (annoying to look at landscape photos as the phone keeps rotating them away from you).

    2. DOESN’T SUPPORT FLASH, aside from youtube and… uh… there’s probably some jackass who made an iphone porn site or something…

    3. Prompt screens (among other things) often stack buttons… which makes it impossible to hit the right one as one of them covers up the other, and there’s ZERO fucking solution.

    4. It has no video recording–not even an APP does it.

    5. Autocorrect sucks enough to turn off, then is convenient enough to turn on… it’s an endlessly annoying cycle, since most typos are from the touch keyboard rather than yourself.

    6. Scrolling around through anything of decent size TAKES HOURS, and there’s no search features or such.

    7. Mobile versions of websites blow monkey shit.

    8. iTunes.

    9. AT&T is a forced provider. The coverage for phone calls and such is mostly fine, but it’s still infuriating (and expensive).

    10. It is NOT a phone, which is actually half the reason I like it–I can hang up whenever I want on some fuckhead I dislike and blame the phone.

    11. To get real use out of the phone, you need to jailbreak it (which is annoying and shouldn’t be necessary, but I guess apple’s got better things to do… like making the same fucking phone 20 times and just doubling the memory.

    12. EARBUDS SUCK.

    13. Headphones and other earbud alternatives… don’t work 99% of the time.

    14. Volume control is annoying, and there’s no music equalizer (which is the only gizmo I even remotely need on my music player, not memory, not playlists, just a FUCKING EQUALIZER).

    15. iTunes & AT&T combined add another item due to profound dipshittery.

    16. Simple apps still take too long to load.

And there goes my attention span… but there’s plenty of good points to it as well:

    1. It has some ridiculous apps, and some decent games, for usually reasonable enough prices… even if half of them are broken and they have no interconnectivity to the browser (apps that force you to sign in to something, then refuse to acknowledge that you did annoy me).

    2. The alerts and alarms and such are the only way I get anything done, and the GPS is the only way I have any fucking clue where I am.

    3. The keyboard works, it’s selecting past typos and correcting them that’s the problem. The keyboard itself is very nice if you actually LOOK AT IT, which I guess some people can’t be bothered to do…

    4. It has motion sensing, a camera, a microphone, GPS, and a shitload of other tech all crammed into it… and they utilize it decently.

    5. The price for the only useful one is $100, which to me (I’m not big on phones, mind you) is quite cheap for all the stuff it does. This with my pocket video camera is all I really need… aside from a DS or PSP, that is. Seriously, why the fuck is $100 considered expensive? The other stupid shit versions are pointless, so there’s no real issue about price in my mind except for the cocksuckers at AT&T overcharging the network.

    6. There are free apps. I don’t care how ignorantly annoying some are, there’s lots of free stuff to at least kill time.

    7. The memory will only run out of even the lowest end 8gig phone if you’re a memory packrat or that jackass who needs 26948372509637016503271503414362573621705632745320714653920614387521436671208748936251798304389265893271496398517892064709325 minutes of fucking music.

    8. It’s intuitive… as in, when you get angry and shake the phone violently in a feeble attempt to stop / undo something, it actually does just that. Holding down a click is right click, dragging after clicking down on something won’t careen you into the link, zooming isn’t too bad, blah blah blah… It’s annoying at times, but in general you can figure something out on the iPhone, whereas on other phones you’ll end up erasing shit by accident instead.

    9. I haven’t broken it yet, with nothing but a tiny ass case for covering the screen. It’s not as fragile as iPods (which seem to be made with paper and glass). I’ve dropped it about 20 times from relatively short heights, It’s gotten its fair share of rain, etc…

    10. The browser is quick, has tabs of a sort, and… nope, nothing really outstanding about it. It works though.

    11. Battery life. I’ve TRIED to kill the damned thing in a single day, but it really impressed me in that even with web browsing and such on, it lasts through a full 12 hour session from home… and it charges quickly enough for me. Though the battery indicator is imprecise and it gives no notices on low battery, it hasn’t died on me yet… To idiots: turn down your brightness to about 20% and it’s just as visible, with about an extra day of battery.

    12. It’s a heat based touch screen, which lets you cover it and still use it, as well as keep it in your pocket without the fucker hitting 40 different buttons.

    13. It’s simple. So you can give it to your friend and NOT have them fuck it up in the two seconds you let it out of your sight.

    14. Giant… screen… because there’s no fucking buttons in the way.

    15. It’s pocket sized… that’s a big fucking deal for someone who’s used to a damned DS or PSP.

    16. The eventuality of a taser app… >=)

    And I’ve lost interest…

By the way, I sent this post from my “phone”. XD
