Up until now, you could only purchase an iPhone 3G on AT&T by also locking yourself into contractual obligations. I say up until now because pretty soon, AT&T will be offering the 8GB and 16GB iPhone 3G, contract free, for the price of $599 and $699 respectively!

This was uncovered by BGR in an internal AT&T presentation:

As the slides explain, you’ll technically only be allowed 1 iPhone 3G purchase per phone number/line, but they have no way of tracking this limit so if you’ve got tons of dough to spend, you could buy everyone an iPhone 3G.
