Verizon, Sprint Could Buy US Cellular

by Rob on March 23rd, 2009

US Cellular is the 5th largest wireless carrier in the United States, preceeded by Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile and followed closly by MetroPCS. Alltel was recently on that list but purchased by Verizon. Consolidation could continue as US Cellular shareholders are supposedly pressruing the company to become part of one of their larger rivals. A buy-out would, supposedly, increase the value of the company and its assets.

verizon-vs-sprintUS Cellular operates a CDMA network which is compatible with that of Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel, making them the most logical buyers. However, Sprint is in somewhat of a financial quandry and Verizon Wireless has their eye on their upcoming 4G network called LTE, based on GSM technology. But boosting your customre base by over 6 million customers is a huge opportunity.

We’ll keep a close eye on this one.
