Weekend Roundup (4/27/09)
| by Rob on April 27th, 2009 |
It’s been a few days since we’ve Roared any Mobile News and I have one thing to say about that… vacation accomodations without internet access or cell service absolutely stink. In any case, its a new week and time to catch up on everything you (and we) missed. So here it is:
Samsung Omnia Pro
You can pretty much tell by the title exactly what we’re insinuating but take it easy… it is ONLY a rumor and at this point, nothing more than a far-fetched rumor. We don’t want to get your hopes up. The accompanying picture isĀ a mock-up done by the blog leaking the information who also say marketing will begin in July. Scroll all the way down on HDBlog.it to read it in English.
New T-Mobile Pre-pay Phone
T-Mobile hasn’t launched a new addition to their T-Mobile Pre-pay phone lineup in the past year… until now. The Samsung T349 is a simple phone that seems to borrow elements from BlackBerry’s SureType keypads with a 20-key keyboard below the directional pad and screen. Not a huge looker (or doer) but if you’re a prepay customer and looking for options, they’ve just cracked open a wee bit. [Via BGR]
Free Refurbished HTC Fuze
If you’re digging the HTC Fuze and are ready to re-up your 2-year contract on AT&T there is possibility that the only thing holding you back is price. Well, if you’re willing to go the refurbished route we’re happy to tell you it won’t cost you a dime and a refurbished HTC Fuze can be yours for free! That’s right… free. [Via AT&T]
EA Lemonade Tycoon on iPhone
Want to go back to your childhood and turn your lemonade stand into an entrepreneurial endeavor worth bragging about? Download Lemonade Tycoon and you can try to do just that, building up your stand’s profit by interacting with options like location, recipe, price and more. Tricia Duryee saig, “For a free game, it’s a high quality experience and actually is fairly addictive.” But free comes with a price… advertisements. It is something EA is testing noting that they are still learning about the dynamic mobile market. Good for them. I hope their ads prove successful/effective as long as they don’t totally ruin the gaming experience for the sake of ads. [Via MocoNews]

Teeny Tiny TMO Embedded SIMs
GSM networks use SIM cards to understand who you are and how to connect your device to a network. Usually removable, the chips allow you to use the same phone number simply by putting your SIM Card into another device. Nice and flexible compared to CDMA, right? Not so according to T-Mobile – they are creating embeddable SIM chips the size of a PIN head that will allow various 3rd part devices such as microwaves, watches and other household and mobile gizmos. Further, they say that products using the technology could launch as soon as THIS SUMMER. Sounds pretty neat to us although what advantages would this have over using Bluetooth in the 3rd party device to sync/connect? [WSJ via IntoMobile]
Ericsson Ready To WesternUnion Sony
After seeing Sony Ericsson’s first quarter financial reports the company seems to be in pretty bad shape. But Ericsson CEO Carl-Henric Svanberg said there is no reason to worry, especially considering the company is willing to pour cash into the joint venture with Sony if necessary. Rumors that a rift was forming between the two companies have arisen with the consumer-wished PlayStation phone being at the heart of many of them, but SE marketing manager Richard Dorman also insists that the joint venture is perfectly healthy. How about infusing that cash into some Android offerings, Mr. Svanberg? [Via EngadgetMobile]
Analysts Predicts Palm Pre $150
Watchful eyes are keeping close track of the Palm Pre and two main criteria: date and price. We know the Pre will launch in the 1st half of 2009 and analysts Credit Suisse seem to think – like many – that a $199 price point would be anything but surprising. However, they seem to think Sprint will price the Pre at $150 in order to better compete in the marketplace with the likes of the iPhone, T-Mobile G1 and various BlackBerry offerings. If they can limbo that low, Credit Suisse also estimates 1.3 million Pre phones will be sold in 2009 and 3 million will be sold in 2010. Not bad especially considering that additional devices with WebOS will likely launch before the year is over. If Palm can make it that far. [Via PalmWebOS.org]
BlackBerry Tour Real Name Of BlackBerry Niagara?
Even before phone manufacturers were giving their devices marketable names like Bold, Pearl and Curve, they got internal cold names like… Javelin, Kickstart and Niagara. That last one – the BlackBerry Niagara 9630 – will most likely hit the market as the BlackBerry Tour. A BGR tipster kicked off the rumor at which point it became apparent that BlackBerryTour.com and BlackBerry9630.com were registered on a prior date and on the same day. If it isn’t the devices official name it is obviously one they were/are considering and seeing as how the Niagara/Tour is a world phone, the Tour name makes sense. We think it’ll stick so there you have it… the BlackBerry Tour 9630. [Via BGR]

HTC Touch Pro 2 Gets Loved Tenderly
No stone is left unturned in an early look at the HTC Touch Pro 2 by Mobile-Review. While the curvier, updated Touch Pro is said to have one of the best mobile keyboards ever made in the history of the earth, the plastic build and high price were pretty significant detractions. We won’t complain until this thing gets subsidized state side but all-in-all it looks like a pretty killer unit. [MobileReview via WMExperts]

LG Versa Game Controller Launches
LG Versa owners have been waiting for the Game Pad to launch for quite some time and it is finally here, available for $29.99 on Verizon Wireless. Time to scope out the top titles and get your game on! [Via VZW]
