Phone Chargers Were So 2008, Nokia & Samsung Say
| by Elias Chiddicks on June 11th, 2009 |
A life without the nuisence of plug-in wall chargers has been the dream for a long time for many cell phone users, so when Palm recently introduced an accessory for the Pre that allowed users to simply place their phone on the charger, we all got a little excited. This device, called the Touchstone, used inductive properties to charge up your Pre.

But, as Nokia tends to do, it thinks it can do us one better. Rather than simply making charging your device an easy and sexy affair a la Pre, it wants to completely eliminate the need for charging in the traditional way.
How does Nokia intend to pull this one off? By using the ambient radio waves that surround us everyday, everywhere. Details on the exact technology (or developement there of) are, of course, very limited, but Nokia thinks it can pull off charging over-the-air, pretty darn literally. If they were actually able to do this, it would make the possibilities for such technologies nearly limitless, so go ahead reader…let your imaginations wander.

But while Nokia is dreaming up these wild schemes, Samsung is giving us actual handsets, albeit not ones using crazy new technologies. You know how your typical calculator is solar powered? Well, that is what Samsung is doing by attention a largish (for the phone) solar panel to the back of the Samsung E1107 to charge up the phone as you use it throughout the day.
But before you get all excited and start using your chargers as ropes know this: currently the “Blue Planet” phone as Samsung calls it needs and hour of charging to get 5 to 10 minutes of additional call time. However, this still beats being nothing when you are on camping adventures and such.
The E1107 is being distributed in India as we speak for $59, with Asia and Latin America following suite shortly.
