Samsung To Sell 10 Million Stars In 2009?
| by Rob on July 1st, 2009 |
Usually when you think of ridiculous sales volume you think of the high end phones like the iPhone and Pre – but that is because those are the phones YOU think people should buy. There are a lot of low to mid-range phone shoppers out there and they lunge for the cheaper devices. Ones like the Samsung Star.
The Samsung Star is touchscreen device with only 2.5 G connectivity but that sad spec doesn’t seem to affect its sales figures; Chinese daily Commercial Times reports that the Samsung Star is selling at a rate of 1 million units per month! And perhaps even more astonishing, Samsung doesn’t think that will slow down as they are projecting more than 10 million Samsung Star Phones to be sold by the end of 2009!
10 Million? Really? My mind just nebulized and got sucked into a black mobile hole.

Welcome outside of the bubble, Rob. The US market is a microcosm and the pundits of Silicon Valley are wishful thinkers. Anybody who’s serious about the obile phone industry recognizes the significance of the innovations brought by the iPhone _but_ knows it is a drop of water in the ocean. Users worldwide want phones that work and that don’t cost too much. Oh, and whose battery lasts more than 1/2 day on idle. My 3Gs needs recharging twice a day. And one of the apple “geniuses” was asked, he asked me to turn off 3G (as well of course as Wifi and Bluetooth), set the backlight to the minimum, turn off push email, and with this I might get a full day if I don’t make too many calls. WTF?? What’s the point? Apple will fail to reach significant volumes anywhere people aren’t religious about the brand, and that’s most of the world.
