Samsung R470 Pictures and Manual
Thanks to the good ‘ol FCC we’ve got preview access to another upcoming phone from a big name manufacturer. This fine specimen is the Samsung R470 which has Bluetooth, a dedicated camera key, USB port, Micro SD slot, dual displays, headphone jack, speakerphone and more.
Take a look at some Samsung R470 pictures we snagged from the FCC docs:
And an extra special thanks to Samsung for even including the full, 47-page Samsung R470 User Manual for us. Page 9 of the manual, which is page 14 of the FCC PDF document, makes mention of easyedge which is OTA download of games, music and whatnot on US Cellular’s network.

So there ya have it… the Samsung R470 headed to US Cellular!

Samsung Sells 10 Million Touch Screen Phones
Say what you will about the poor outlook for mobile in 2009, Samsung isn’t blinking. That’s because they sold more than 10,000,000 million Touch Screen phones in 2008 and this higher end type of handset looks to be the least affected by adverse economic conditions if device costs are kept under reigns.
Strategy Analytics projected 2008 touch phone sales would reach 37 million so that 10 million figure means that 1 out of every 4 touchscreen’s purchased is a Samsung. The breakdown geographically of those sales is 4 million in Europe, 2.2 million in USA, 1.12 million in Korea, 910,000 in China and the remaining 1.77 million presumably scattered across the map.
Samsung had a number of winners in 2008 from their self proclaimed iPhone Killing Instinct to the Innov8 and Pixon. We’re expecting more of the good stuff in 2009 and wouldn’t be surprised to see their market share increase even if they don’t break the 10 million barrier. And with an Android phone planned next year? Pitch. Swing. Home Run.

Samsung HighNote Gets Loved Semi-Tenderly
The boys at Engadget took a few minutes to play with the Samsung Highnote which at first site seems like taking pity on an inferior lifeform. While we’re all obsessed with the high end mobile devices, we have to remember that the middle of the road gadgets are the ones that serve the masses and serve does the Samsung Highnote.

This Samsung is called the Highnote because of its music-centric focus, primarily its ability to blast tunes through a loud speaker revealed after sliding. While the effort is admirable and the sound aplenty, it isn’t anything massively greater than other phones of its type - just another real loud speaker which, we can’t complain about.
But with a scrollable wheel, nice UI and navigation, 3.55mm headphone jack and dedicated messaging button, the Samsung Highnote might serve the average mobile user who wants to bust some tunes and send out the semi-regular text.

T-Mobile upcoming release dates get pictured
Woah! BoyGenius seems to have gotten their hands on some seriously exciting blurry pics for those on T-Mobile or those wanting to join up. Most exciting is the RIM Curve 8900 and Samsung Memoir that show up for Feb. 18 release.
Excitement surrounding the 8900 is a bit self-explanatory given the previous Curve’s success, but the Memoir is a powerful beast itself, packing a 8 megapixel camera.

The full list is:
• January 21: Sony Ericsson TM506 in scarlett (red, clearly, would not have sufficed)
• January 21: Nokia 7510
• January 28: T-Mobile Shadow
• February 4: Motorola Renew and Samsung t119
• February 18: Curve 8900 and Samsung Memoir

Samsung S8300 Pics: Remind Us Of Innov8
There is a new version of the ever-popular Samsung Soul coming out in March 2009 but pictures of the device have just surfaced. The Samsung S8300 is a slider that is only 12.8mm thick yet packs an 8mp camera and 2.8-inch WQVGA touch screen.

While its said to be the next generation Soul, we couldn’t help but think this phone looks strikingly similar to the Samsung Innov8 which appears to be headed for AT&T:

Agree/Disagree?
But we know you didn’t read this post to get more Innov8 action so let us continue. The S8300 is said to be made with duralumin which protects the body from scratches and fingerprints. Toss in auto focus, GPS, FM radio, Bluetooth 2.1, HSDPA and 60MB of onboard memory and you’re golden.

We like this phone a lot but chances are we’ll never see it in the states. Sigh.

Samsung Innov8 Through FCC, On Amazon, Soon AT&T
If you want one of the most amazing digicam phones on the planet and happen to live in North America your options are expanding rapidly. The Samsung Innov8 is an 8 megapixel powerhouse that has just popped up on Amazon and unlocked for $799.

Fret not frugal folks, the phone also passed through the FCC with a 850/1900MHhz model that is likely to hit AT&T with those subsidized discounts we all love so much. It could also be used on Rogers 3G network in Canada but that - at least at the moment - seems less likely.

Some of the Samsung Innov8 key features:
- Symbian S60-powered
- 8 Megapixel Camera
- Dual LED Flash
- Digital Image Stabilization
- Facial Recognition
- WiFi
- GPS Receiver
- MicroSD
- 3G Connectivity
This is looking REALLY good. With Casio’s Exilim Phone hitting Verizon in the near future as well, its only a matter of time before your phone replaces your digital camera as the technologies converge.

AT&T Samsung Propel Review By Unwired View
UnwiredView was right when they said AT&T had a gaping hole in its mobile phone lineup - where were the teen oriented texters? And as they mention, the lightbulb went off and the hole was plugged with a whopping FOUR devices in that category: AT&T Quickfire, Pantech Slate, Pantech Matrix and Samsung Propel.
They took a few minutes to review the Samsung Propel which if you don’t THINK you know about… you probably do. And by that I mean, have you seen this commercial before?
Ozzy Osbourne fits the bill for reaching young people with this clever little tie in with the Prince of Darkness. But it all comes down to the phone… is it worth it?
Here are some of the key comments from Unwired View’s Review:
- Keyboard eerily similar to BlackJack II
- Good size: Condensed for handling but not too small for key room
- Nice, easy UI
- Nice color choices: blue, white/red or green/black
- Maybe a little too “square” in shape
- Built to text, not much else (like 1.3MP camera)
Basically, the Samsung Propel accomplishes exactly what it set out to do - text very well - and everything else is an added (and limited) bonus.
Check out Unwired View for the full review.
Samsung Android Headed To Sprint & T-Mobile
If you have an appetite for Android and think the Samsung Omnia and Samsung Instinct were pretty hot, then you’re in for a treat. By June 2009, Samsung plans on releasing a compareable Android device on T-Mobile and Sprint, according to an article by Korea IT News.
Its actually quite amazing that T-Mobile will go so long without competition for their Android Phone. But whatever Samsung is cooking up, we’re eager to feast our eyes on it. Samsung released some amazing handsets in 2008 and we fully expect their first Android handset to follow that path of success.
To get the job done - and hopefully done right - Samsung has added 30 more developers to their existing 50+ man/woman/person/robot team and we’re praying that they can meet or beat any timelines they’ve set.
If you’re a Spint customer, there’s a good chance you’re playing the air guitar or celebrating in similar fashion - Sprint has been a member of the Open Handset Alliance since Day 1 but this is the first we’re hearing about an actual phone from a specific manufacturer with a speciifc timeline.

Sprint in January: Pink Instinct, Treo Pro
A leaked document shows what Sprint has planned for the month of January and the two highlights are a Pink version of the Samsung Instinct and the Palm Treo Pro. Neither are exactly show stoppers but both are admirable additions in style and substance on Sprint’s lineup.

Others devices listed are a modem, Samsung Rant and Motorola i365IS which is a rugged, military grade device. So Sprint fans… do any of these additions pique your interest?

Mobile Roundup: Long Weekend Catch Up
Although you haven’t seen many updates/articles/posts in the past few days we HAVE been hard at work. We’ve You’ll understand later this week, but until then, here is a weekly roundup of some big news we missed on Friday/Saturday/Sunday:
Sony Walkpod

Sony might be gearing up to release a competitor to the iPod Touch. Switch out the LCD for an OLED and you might have Sony’s next Walkman device. It would be released at CES in January and is said to sport full access to YouTube, WiFi, web browser, built in noise cancelling and more. More at CrunchGear.
Android OPhone

Lenovo, the company well known for laptops, is rumored to be releasing an Android device called the “Ophone” and a leaked picture shows that it’s sexiness is unparalleled. Even iFanbois have to admit its pretty hot. Unfortunately, it looks like a China-only release unless they gut the insides and replace them with some American capable connection parts. It also appears that someone else has the “OPhone” name trademarked for an Android Handset so that name isn’t likely to stick. Or perhaps its a partnership? Read more at UnwiredView and Engadget.
Ugliness is Expensive

Boing Boing Gadgets had a pretty funny/disgusting article about a phone that we couldn’t have described any better, “Givori’s newest and most hideous bling-encrusted luxury phone, the Nefertiti. It’s 24 carat gold dipped in glue and rolled in Swarovski crystals. It looks exactly like a mobile phone coated in globulous ambergris and ripped from the festering bowels of a sperm whale. Needless to say, you can only buy this in luxury stores in Dubai, and it costs almost $4500 to look this tasteless.” [Via BoingBoing Gadgets]
Palm Launching New OS

Palm has sent out invitations to a special event at CES where they will put on display, “all that Palm New-ness you’ve been waiting for.” That is likely to mean the new Operating System they’ve had in the works for quite awhile now and it could also mean a new handset that is supposed to “save” the company. Either way, it better not disappoint because Palm doesn’t seem to have too much room left for error, especially in this new world economy. [Via Engadget]
Samsung Pixon Headed to AT&T

It’s looking like the Samsung Pixon, by virtue of the FCC, will soon grace the catolog of available phones on AT&T’s lineup. The phone has an 8MP camera and is sure to have it’s fair share of followers if a suitable subsidy is tacked on. More at Cell Phone Signal.
Garmin Nuvifone Passes FCC Hurdle

It’s a shame that the Nuvifone didn’t see sunlight in 2008 - simply based on the Garmin name it would have received a whole lot of holiday love. Since its passed the FCC, it looks like the 1H 2009 timeline is looking right - although the phone was first announced almost a year ago. This is definitely a device to keep an eye on and even with moderate success, you would expect Garmin to swing for the fences with a holiday 2009 handset followup. [Via Engadget, FCC]
Estonia Mobile Elections in 2011

This passed year, the country Estonia successfully implemented Internet voting in the political arena. The success will be followed up with mobile voting in 2011 as it proved secure and reliable by independent 3rd party testing. It will require mobile voters, “to obtain a free, authorized chip for their phones that will verify owner identity and authorize participation in the mobile voting system.” Doesn’t sound THAT secure to me… you? [Via BGR]
Samsung Memoir & 8MP Camera Headed to T-Mobile?
Samsung has been pumping out some beauties with the Behold, Eternity, Pixon and INNOV8 to name a few. Now it appears as if the first 8MP camera phone will hit American shores, giving T-Mobile fans reason to rejoice. The best guess right now is that the spy shots below are of the Samsung Memoir, headed to T-Mobile:

Keep in mind that these are guesses and only guesses. Speculation is that this phone takes the Samsung Behold with its 5MP camera and gives it a little upgrade. Exactly what upgrades? We don’t know that either, beyond the camera. We’ll have to play wait and see on this one, so keep your eyes peeled.

Samsung Ego Thinks Too Much Of Itself
If you ask us, the Samsung Ego is properly named: based on the pricetag it seems to have an inflated feeling of superiority to other mobile phones in the market. The Samsung Ego can strut its stuff but it doesn’t even look that hot and specs only reflect a so-so personality.
The phone costs about $1800 US Dollars but is only available in Europe. Here is the product you’ll be getting for that:

I mean, it’s okay… but if I’m shelling out $1800 bucks this thing better turn into a magic carpet or something. Instead, the phone doesn’t even have 3G! Its 5MP ain’t bad but it only has 1GB of internal memory and the external microSD holds 8GB.
Why so expensive? The Samsung Ego is made by a new exotic liquid metal alloy developed by the California Institute of Technology which is, “3 times stronger, can withstand 1.8 times the pressure, is 1.6 time more flexible, has 3 times better vibration absorbtion and 100% lower thermal conductivity then titanium.”
And I care because? Perhaps this phone is for people whose head is so large it has its own gravitational field - the Samsung Ego was created to counteract these increased pressures?
For those whose gullability matches their egotisticality, your nearly 2 Geez will get you the following specs on top of everything else discussed:
- Triband GSM (900/1800/1900 Mhz), GPRS/EDGE connectivity on 1st SIM card
- Dual band (900/1800 Mhz), GPRS/EDGE connectivity on 2nd SIM card
- 2? 262K color QVGA AMOLED display
- 5 mpx camera with autofocus, image stabilization, smile detection, WDR and LED flash
- FM Radio with RDS
- 1 GB of built-in memory
- microSDHC memory card slot (up to 8 GB)
- Bluetooth 2.0 and USB
- 960 mAh battery
- Dimensions: 115 x 48 x 16 mm
- Weight: 140 g
Enjoy that.

Samsung Omnia Video Tour By PhoneScoop
Props to the folks at PhoneScoop who put together a really nice video overview of the Samsung Omnia i910. My favorite part of this phone is the panorama picture taking capability which they demonstrate at the end. And altogether, the Omnia camera seems pretty sweet but here is the entire tour for your viewing pleasure:
Verizon’s Samsung Omnia Slashed $50
It was just last week that Verizon announced the Samsung Omnia for $249.99 but apparently nobody heard or cared enough to pay much attention. Now Verizon is all waving the Omnia in the air like, “look at me, look at me!” and discounting the phone $50 for a $199.99 pricetag.

As you may have guessed - we did - the BlackBerry Storm probably took away any and all attention that may have been directed at the Omnia since its launch. Anyone who purchased the Omnia for full price right at launch time HAS to be pretty upset at the price drop, right? I know the argument that early adopters have a price to pay for being the first to have a gadget in their hands… but 1 week later?
Pretty peculiar that we’re complaining about a price drop, isn’t it? Lets get something clear… the $199.99 price point is MUCH more attractive and puts it on an even investment playing field with the BlackBerry Storm which has an identical price tag. We just feel for those folks who picked up the Omnia in the first 6 days - that’s all.
Don’t believe us? See for yourself: Samsung Omnia at Verizon Wireless
The Goyard So Hard Man I’m Hugo’s Boss
The title is a line from Kanye West’s song called “The Glory” and its songs like these that for the last couple decades have blurred the lines between hot brands and hot bands and that is undoubtedly evident in the gadget world as well with rappers like Jay-Z and Lil Wayne commonly talking about their BlackBerry and iPhone.
The demand created by style icons are the reason style phones like the LG Prada are so popular and lucrative. Samsung is the latest to enter into this market with a Hugo Boss branded version of the F480 Tocco.

Here are some of the phone’s key features and specs:
- tri-band phone with HSDPA 7.2Mbps support
- 2.8″ touchscreen
- QVGA display
- 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, power LED flash, image and video stabilization.
- audio and video player with multiple file format support
- FM Radio with RDS
- TouchWiz user interface and navigation
The phone should begin selling in Hugo Boss retail stores throughout Europe in December. Maybe the title should be changed to, “The Samsung So Fun Man It’s Hugo’s Boss”

Samsung Omnia Now Available On Verizon!
For Verizon Wireless Customers who also happen to be Samsung Omnia fans, two worlds have collided because the Samsung Omnia is Now Available For Purchase on Verizon Wireless.
And if you’re on the fence, trying to decide between oh… I don’t know…. the Omnia, Touch Pro and Storm - which I’m sure many of you are doing - here are some Samsung Omnia reviews which might make the task at hand a little bit easier. Press Release from VZW at the bottom!
Gizmodo Reviews the Omnia
If you’re looking for a Windows Mobile device on Verizon, you don’t have a lot of (good) options. Luckily, the Omnia is one of the best choices for WinMo overall, not just on the carrier, though we wouldn’t blame you for wanting the actual keyboard of the Touch Pro. However, that’ll cost you $100 more, since the Verizon Touch Pro is $350 to the Omnia’s $250.
CNET Reviews the Omnia
Though slightly more expensive, Verizon customers looking for a touch-screen smartphone will get a better user experience and faster performance from the Samsung Omnia than the RIM BlackBerry Storm. The Samsung Omnia features a spacious touch screen with customizable Home screen, haptic feedback, and accelerometer. The Windows Mobile smartphone also offers Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, and EV-DO Rev. A support, as well as a 5-megapixel camera and robust multimedia features.
CrunchGear Reviews the Omnia
The Omnia boasts just about every feature you’d want from a smartphone and Verizon, surprisingly, left it exactly the way it leaves the Samsung factory. Sure, they added their VZ Navigator app and the VZAppZone but we’re okay with that because they left the Omnia untouched. For a Windows Mobile device with a decent skin Samsung calls the TouchWiz, the Omnia is the clear choice for Verizon Wireless customers.

Verizon Wireless has priced the Samsung Omnia for $249.99 after a $70 mail-in rebate with a new two-year customer agreement. Customers will receive the rebate in the form of a debit card; upon receipt, customers may use the card as cash anywhere debit cards are accepted.
Goodluck Smart Phone Shopping!
Verizon Samsung Omnia Comes Tomorrow
If the BlackBerry Storm isn’t up your alley, perhaps its the lack of WiFi getting you down. No need to sulk, Verizon’s version of the Samsung Omnia should be released tomorrow on the web and start landing in retail stores on December 8th or so.
At $249.99 after a $70 Mail-In Rebate, the Samsung Omnia packs a 5MP Camera, Windows Mobile 6.1 and here is a picture of the box proving that WiFi is in the cards for this device - many were worried VZW would cripple the device and remove WiFi to make more money on data plans:

The Omnia has been floating around Asian markets like Singapore for quite some time now. Lets hope that Samsung was spending the last 6 months perfected the hardware and software so that it could land on Verizon nothing short of flawless.

Another solid choice for Verizon customers!

Samsung Omnia… In The Eye Of The Storm
In the world of mobile technology, November 21st 2008 belonged to the BlackBerry Storm and Verizon Wireless. But while the Storm caused a ruckus in long lines across the nation, even forcing police to restore order in a NYC Verizon store, there may have been a calm in the day that nobody noticed. The Samsung Omnia at Verizon Wireless could carefully be brewing up an excited launch of its own.

Employee training on the Verizon Omnia started (supposedly) on November 15th but it seems that the devices may already be in stores, albeit not on display. Signs are pointing to a release right around the corner on this sweet device with a 5MP camera, 240 x 400 pixels touchscreen display, accelerometer, GPS, Wi-Fi and more.
Here are a few pics of Verizon’s Samsung Omnia captured in-store:
Was the BlackBerry Storm not your cup of tea? Perhaps the Samsung Omnia will float your boat. But no matter which one you prefer, or even if you prefer neither, you have to admit that Verizon is making a strong push for Santa’s holiday dollar with 2 awesome phones right before the thick of the holiday shopping begins.
At least we hope…. Come on Omnia!
Verizon’s Samsung Omnia Captured On Camera
The BlackBerry Storm is getting a lot of attention these days - and for good reason - but don’t forget that the Samsung Omnia will likely be launching on Verizon before the year is over. It was caught in the wild by an anonymous engadget tipster and the Visual Voicemail and VZNav icons all but prove its Verizon’s version.

Looks pretty good. Not that the Storm is cowering in fear or anything, but there are probably a bunch of phones that are doing just that. The Omnia is a very good looking WinMo phone with a 5MP cam and lots going for it.
We’re guessing a lot of VZW customers are choosing between the Storm and the Omnia… which will/would YOU choose?

Samsung Eternity Now On AT&T, $149.99
Samsung has been busy, busy, busy. While they just wrapped up their launch of the Samsung Saga and Samsung Renown on Verizon Wireless they also just launched the Samsung Eternity for AT&T. If we had to guess, the name probably comes from how many hours the engineers feel like they’re working after churning out all these top of the line handsets!
Not too bad looking, is it? A lot of folks are calling it a toned down Omnia or Behold or a ramped up version of the Vu. Either way, its a good looking touch screen phone with some subtle differences between the above mentioned that you’ll want to know about.
Good news or bad news first? Bad news? Okay… it doesn’t have WiFi which is a deal breaker for some people. Some might consider this next one a plus but it doesn’t have Windows Mobile but instead features a proprietary UI/OS that - at least on the surface - doesn’t look too shabby. But you know how those go.
Now for the good news. Here is how AT&T explain the “good news” themselves: “Tap into your potential, without paying a fortune. This sleek touch- screen phone is loaded with entertainment apps and the latest features. At your fingertips: Mobile TV, AT&T Navigator GPS, Video Share, 3G Web browsing, 3 MP camera, on-screen full-touch QWERTY keyboard, music, accelerometer, and more. Plus, customizable color lighting accents and a clever vibration response to touch - all at a price that’s within reach.”
And the above little paragraph doesn’t even mention that the Eternity is a quad-band world phone. Maybe the name should be called the “Universally” instead of the “Eternity”. And in related news, we’re now hiring writers who excel in humor and phone naming.
