Samsung Pixon Gets Nick Turpin’ed

Creating mini-sites based on fictionally invented characters used to promote the hottest new gadget is all the rage these days and Samsung continues the trend with the Samsung Pixon. They’ve got a mini-site claiming to share “The Photographic Adventures of Nick Turpin” on October 2nd.

Whatever genius over there is doing the domain name selection needs to either read a tutorial or be moved to a different department. You read for this? You can check out the mini-site for yourself at: http://www.thephotographicadventuresofnickturpin.com/

Wow… try to type that into your URL bar and there is a 85.76 percent chance you’ll fall asleep midway through the word “adventures”. Thats just sad. The phone itself, however, seems pretty beastly.

Samsung Pixon Has Tea with INNOV8

The Samsung INNOV8 is no longer alone as Samsung’s only 8MP camera phone. The formerly rumored Samsung M8800 Bresson is actually the Samsung Pixon and is sporting the following specs:

Perhaps best of all is the way this thing looks:

Pretty beautiful if you ask me. Unfortunately, it appears as if GPS and WiFi may be missing. If thats the case, consider the Pixon the cheap version of the INNOV8. For people that want an 8MP camera phone, why not offer a high end and lower end? I like that they give the consumer the option.

Samsung Bresson M8800 Rumored

The Samsung Innov8 may not sit alone as soon to be 8 megapixel touch phones from Samsung. An online retailer was spotted pre-selling the Samsung Bresson 8800, a full touch screen device with an 8MP camera, quad-band GSM, tri-band HSDPA, Google Search & Maps, Accu Weather, and the latest Samsung CNN News & Sports application.

How do these jokesters get ahold of these devices we find on half baked retailers and Ebay is beyond us. And, we’re always weary of information from a source that is selling phones that haven’t even been announced yet. Make of it what you will, but we’ll be watching this one like a hawk.

All you geniuses out there probably guessed that the “question mark” means no photos of the Samsung Bresson have escaped the trenches. You were correct.

Sprint: 5 New Phones Announced!

Sprint seemed to make the first splash at CTIA although the size is debateable: they’ve announced the LG Lotus, Samsung Highnote and Samsung Rant. None of the 3 offer anything groundbreaking but they’re nice additions to the lineup. They’ve also officially launched the HTC Touch Diamond and HTC Touch Pro.

The most interesting of the announcements is the LG Lotus since we already new about the Diamond/Pro. It’s offered here in purple and is square in shape:

Samsung Omnia Soon on AT&T and Verizon

The mighty Samsung Omnia was once feared (by Americans) to only be hitting foreign shores due to the i900’s UMTS 2100MHz only support. While Samsung has been rumored supposedly promised a US-destined version that will support the 850/1900Mhz bands required there. Now, with FCC documentation supporting the claims, it appears the Samsung Omnia will not only reach AT&T but also Verizon Wireless!

FCC Documentation outed AT&T’s Samsung Omnia as model number i907 with HSDPA connectivity, making AT&T the obvious suitor. That same document talks about the i910, another Samsung Omnia variant that will have CDMA support. You guessed it - that is the one hitting Verizon Wireless.

As a refresher, the Samsung Omnia is a 5-megapixel multimedia powerhouse that comes with Bluetooth and WiFi, Windows Mobile 6.1 and a ton of media editing options. Given it’s huge potential, we’re welcoming a speedy arrival to American shores.

Samsung Instinct at RadioShack: $99.99

The Samsung Instinct is one of Sprint’s best ever selling phones. It completely took off and they must have known they had something good with enough guts to launch an advertising campaign that pits it 1 on 1 with the iPhone. And BestBuy… well they inherited this gem by being the exclusive retail partner for the Samsung Instinct.

The Samsung Instinct is now on sale at Radio Shack for $99.99. It’ll be interesting to see how well these suckers sell over the next several months as more and more competitors enter the market. Nonetheless, if you’re in need of an Instinct, add RadioShack to your solution provider!

Samsung Instinct Application Updates

Sprint and Samsung’s self-proclaimed iPhone Killer is asking their owner’s a question: can we update your applications? Instinct owners are reporting sweeping updates of apps that include improved web browsing, quicker mobile tv/radio, Sprint Music Store improvements, improved picture mail and more.

In actuality you aren’t “asked” you are just “notified” that your application was updated next time you launch it. And the schedule for updates is pretty random so don’t be alarmed if some of your apps have been updated and others haven’t over the coming week or so.

White Samsung Omnia… The oPhone

The Samsung Omnia is, at the moment, only available in Singapore. A few MobileRoar forum members have been discussing the potential of the phone coming to the United States and trust us… you should start praying it does.

Not only does it feature set and specs blow mostly everything else completely out of the water… but its got the looks to boot. And, with the release of the White Samsung Omnia it looks a lot like another device we know:



It looks so much like the iPhone that it should be called the oPhone. And no, not oPhone has in OmniaPhone copying the iPhone. We mean oPhone as in when you see it you’ll make your O face (*cough* Office Space *cough*). If it weren’t for the iPhone App Store it wouldn’t even be a question of preference.

The problem is that because of the specs on this bad boy, AT&T would make the most sense. AT&T has the iPhone locked up in the states through 2009. So will they release a phone that cannabolizes iPhone sales? We hope so. Unless they have some sort of allegiance and/or contract to/with Apple.

So let me get this straight: you can’t chew bubble gum in Sinagpore but its the only place in the world where you can easily purchase/use a Samsung Omnia? Hmmm…

UPDATE: TheUnwired is now reporting that the Samsung Omnia i900 is now getting its first ROM updates which, we unhappily don’t need because we can’t buy the Omnia in the first place! Those that can, and have it, we would appreciate your input!

Samsung Instinct Software Update Does?

Call it an update… but don’t call it a comeback.

Sprint might have hit a homerun with the Samsung Instinct as it achieved huge sales numbers and is already the wireless carrier’s best selling EV-DO device of all-time. Best-Selling perhaps but Best? Maybe not.

Engadget highlighted several data related complaints about the phone and users chimed in with a laundry list of problems that popped up as owners got more familiar with the device. Being such an important device made us think that maybe, with a software update, Sprint might address some of these issues.

Yes and no. There is an update available now. But unfortunately, according to Engadget, it does very little to address any of these problems.

Samsung INNOV8 Packs 8MP of Punch

Good things seem to be coming in 8s recently. The year 2008 marks an accelerated pace at which phones are equipping killer cameras and the Samsung INNOV8 is yet another mobile phone packing 8 megapixels of punch…  this bad boy will compete directly with the Sony Ericsson C905.

The phone isn’t just called INNOV8 because of the 8MP camera… it has a whole host of innovative multimedia features, especially with the camera. For example, the camera has auto-focus, face recognition, smile recognition, blink recognition, auto panorama, geotagging, LED flash, VGA video recording with at 30fps along with slow-mo QVGA video, which will be captured at 120fps. WOW.

That is a feature set that others should IMIT8 and anyone who wants to diss this phone before they’ve got it in their own hands are just ASSIN9.

In addition to 8GB and 16GB internal memory options, there is an expansion MicroSD slot so you can hold even MORE multimedia from pictures to music to videos to files… whatever. Connectivity options abound - this is looking like one sweet deal - whatever the price.

The Samsung Innov8 will hit Europe in August and make its way to other markets in September. Lets hope one of those markets is yours mine.

Samsung Continues 8MP Parade with i8510

We’re not sure how many times the camera phone megapixel barrier has been broken this year, but it seems like a Cold War style arms race for the top manufacturers to produce the phone with the biggest snapshot. Sony Ericsson was first with the C905, then rumors of an LG 8MP beast hit the streets and now 8MP phone rumors from Samsung are staring us in the eyes.

So the convergence of phones and cameras continue. Pretty soon, only the photograph obsessed and career 1-2-3-Cheesers will need a dedicated picture taking device. Speaking of pictures, take a look at these shots, rumored to be the Samsung i8510 (scroll down for specs and source):

Samsung Omnia: Germany, Italy, USA?

Samsung seems to have a heavy hitter in their upcoming flagship phone - the Samsung i900 Omnia. Packing a 3.2 inch WQVGA, 5 megapixel camera, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and more, there are plenty of business power users and consumers keeping an eye on this thing.

Take those eyes and peer over to Italy, where the Omnia will first be released on July 22nd, and then Germany on August 6th before rolling out to the remainder of Europe throughout August. Pick your choice of carriers as T-Mobile, Vodafone, E-Plus and O2 all seem to be offering the device.

GSM Arena is reporting that Italians who pre-order the device, up to a limited number, will also receive a Free XBOX 360? Sounds like one of those “enter your e-mail address here for a free iPhone” scams but we’re dying to know a little more about the validity. This “pre-sale” offer apparently starts on July 14th… yesterday. Any timetravelling Europeans that can figure this out?

Will the glorious Omnia make its way to the USA? Rumors that AT&T will get a version of the Omnia seem pretty solid, but not guaranteed. A recent FCC document for the Samsung i907 has some thinking THIS could be the AT&T version of the phone but the dimensions and shape seem different than the i900 which is somewhat of a mystery.

So let me get this straight… not only do they get the Omnia first but they also get Free XBOX 360s with them? Yeah, sounds real fair Samsung… spoil them why don’t you!

Omnia vs. iPhone

We’re not going to make any reference the letter after H cellular device murderer here… those talks are tired. But what we WILL do is show some pictures comparing the Samsung Omnia with the iPhone. Afterall, both of these bad boys will be on AT&T and before you drop some hefty coin, you want to make sure you’re buying what you want.

Not bad looking - either of them - eh? See the difference in the upper left hand corner? That’s the Omnia’s 5MP phone compared to the 2MP of the iPhone - one of the nice edges that the Omnia offers.

The Omnia also appears to be slightly thicker but also shorter and less wide. But don’t get the idea that its “stocky” or “frumpy”… they are pretty compareable as you can see below:

Samsung Instinct Software Updates?

The guys at CrunchGear apparently went forum perousing (or more likely got a tip) that the Samsung Instinct will get a software update on June 30th.

There have been a few little bugs with the Samsung Instinct and supposedly, this quickly pushed update will cure those ailments. So if you’re inclined to believe a rumor from a rumor from a forum that nobody has ever heard of… follow these directions on the 30th and see if the Instinct Gods shine on you that day:

Rumor has it that the Samsung Omnia will suit up for the Blue Team with AT&T offering the phone in the near future. And by near future we mean July, August or September. Seeing as how initial conventional wisdom reported the Omnia wouldn’t make it to the states, this news couldn’t be any more exciting.

In addition to the regular AT&T multimedia features such as AT&T Music, AT&T Video and AT&T Navigator, the Omnia will also feature AT&T Mobile TV!

We mean Gangsta as in Mr. Pink from Reservoir Dogs style gangsta, not Tupac Shakur from Juice style Gangsta. So would that make it GangstER? Who knows.

The point is, Samsung & Sprint are obviously heavily invested in making the Instinct a huge success and the latest way to help their handsome handset fulfill its potential? Viral video marketing. We admit… its pretty funny:

After running a HUGE, $100 Million ad campaign based on Instinct vs. iPhone, the $199 cost seemed to fall in line… but that line stands corrected!

The Instinct, which has received incredibly high praises from sources across the board, was already poised to get its fair share of looks. Now, with a MUCH lower pricing point, the Samsung Instinct for Sprint looks like it could be a real powerhouse - offering a high-end phone for a mid-range price.

Just as we predicted, the pricing for the Instinct is 1 penny lower than the iPhone 3G… AND you get unlimited data for that price on the Sprint Network.

Samsung Omnia Gets Tagged & Dated

It didn’t take long for the Samsung Omnia to take front and center as #1 phone you want but cannot have. The Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 is on that list but questions concerning the keyboard could drag it down and the Sony Ericsson C905 looks amazing but has a drawback here and there.

And thus is the glory of not-yet-released phones - we can bask in the glory of their potential without harping on the flaws that will inevitably be made apparent - no phone is perfect. And the Omnia’s main flaw, at this point, seems to be the fact that I can’t get one in the United States.

Laugh all you want geeks in Singapore, Europe, China and Taiwan… the Omnia will be rolling out from July through August in a store near you.

With the option of 8GB or 16GB internal memory and a MicroSD slot adding another 16GB, this bad boy could hold a whopping 32GB of data. Even with a 5MP Digital Camera it will take a long time to fill it up… plenty of space for music, business files and whatever else you need.

Seoul, South Korea, June 16, 2008 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced two environmentally friendly mobile handsets, W510 and F268, at the World IT Show in Seoul.

W510 is Samsung’s first mobile phone with ‘bio-plastic’ made from natural material extracted from corn. Samsung has been making an effort to develop more renewable and eco-friendly material compared with common plastic produced from petroleum.

Moreover, when producing W510, Samsung did not use any heavy metals, such as lead, mercury, and cadmium, and applied water-soluble coating.

Samsung F268 and all its accessories, including charger and headset, do not contain BFRs (brominated flame retardants) or PVC.

In addition, Samsung F268 has an alarm function to encourage users to unplug their charger when the device is fully charged. The product is following the Energy Star requirements as well, which are strict energy-efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy.

Both W510 for the Korean market and F268 for the Chinese market will be launched in June.

Samsung Omnia Video Review Galore!

Greg Kumparak got his greasy hands (he said it first!) all over the Samsung Omnia, pushing our jealousy to the limits. However, we forgive him because he shared an awesome video of his experience with the phone:

That thing looks devilishly delightful. Kind of curious to get a better look at the QWERTY keyboard as the buttons for each letter look kind of narrow and difficult to press.

The responsiveness of the touch screen doesn’t seem, at first glance, to be one of the best out there. In the below video, which was actually filmed by a Samsung rep and posted by Samsung to YouTube, selections seem to have a bit of lag time and scrolling up and down by “flicking” doesn’t yield the response one might expect.

The final video is almost guaranteed to raise your estrogen levels. The extended demonstration of the touchscreen is pretty amazing… but its the accompanying music that has us wondering if Bette Midler produced this masterpiece.

We hope you enjoy these videos. Personally, we would describe the feeling more as “satisfied”… we won’t feel full enjoyment until we get one of these bad boys in our hands!
