Dare Version 5 update information, some released
I have been notified by Verizon Wireless that the Dare's Version 5 software update includes the addition of V CAST Mobile TV. Also, some customers were able to use VVM while others couldn't...so this update will also fix that.
It also includes a few other things which cannot be disclosed for security reasons.

I don't have that information, unfortunately. Verizon Wireless simply sent out a standard email notifying us of a few updates...and this was one of them.

nick can only pass along info released to him
and as he said even that had limits
when several posts are made in different forums as to fixes
they verified on their phones, well that is a more solid info base
no reflection on nick,
but i would never take one individual's post as proof positive
until several others confirm
thanks again nick for passing what you are allowed

Will we be able to download it from the phone or take it into the store for the update? I keep on checking my update on the phone and it still says that theres no newer update available

How could they add Mobile TV without the media flo chipset in the phone itself, and does anyone even have VVM on the Dare yet? This doesn't make sense to me.
Also I was unable to get the update at my local Verizon store, so I suppose I am SOL for now.

I knew this answer right away! The Media Flo chipset (antenna) is already in the phone to receive the signal, except it is turned off. The phone was supposed to be released with Mobile TV, but due to formatting complications, they couldn't figure out how to design a new all touch Mobile TV interface.
They eventually did, and my email says it is now available. Do not ask me where or how, I just know that is what the information I have says.
I have heard of customers subscribing to VVM on the older versions. I have also heard of some not being able to do so. The update fixes these issues.

I received the new firmware a couple of days ago.
I have not seen the TV mode in it.
I also noticed that the mp3 player has not been changed; it still plays the same old songs.
Oddly enough, my battery life has somehow dwindled since the update. I used to talk on the phone for 1 hour, text about 100 times, listen to music for about 45-50 minutes and I would MAYBE lose a bar. Yesterday I did this and lost 2 bars.
Just my experience from the new update.

I urge you to continue to be patient with Verizon Wireless.
I know it is beginning to get annoying. I have simply relayed information that was provided to me from Verizon/LG. Like I said, all information we are provided is not guaranteed to be true...hence why there is so much secrecy. We try to avoid causing chaos by simply not providing information. Much of the information customers want to know is not even available to Verizon Wireless employees.
Updates are out of our hand...contact LG for further assistance.

Vzw
Verizon IS NOT spreading lies. People get mad at us for all the secrecy...but when we release information, it isn't guaranteed to be correct, therefore, people get mad. That is why everything is so secretive.
I can also assure you that any Verizon Wireless phone you get will be locked and only be able to be used with our select services...it is the way all CDMA carriers operate...
We do all know Verizon Wireless is the best, and sometimes people must make sacrifices to have the best...
Try T-Mobile maybe? They are better than AT&T but not as good as Verizon...but their services are more open.

To be honest, I can't explain that.
Here is what I know:
FACT: The LG Dare has the Media Flo Mobile TV service antenna built into the phone, so it is completely able to access Mobile TV, when ready. This chip was turned off.
FACT: I have received word in an email from Verizon Wireless stating that upon the newest firmware release, Mobile TV was supposed to be turned on and is available under the Media Center--->Pictures/Videos section, first option on the list.
FACT: Verizon Wireless/LG had originally planned to launch Mobile TV with the phone on its debut. This failed since we went into mediation trying to determine how to design an all touch accessible interface of Mobile TV...since this has never been done before. We failed to determine an interface before its release.

Yea, all the aggression is towards verizon.
I could take a picture of how I don't have TV and I can give you the number of the store I went to so you can verify i got the firmware.
I know you're saying verizon isn't lying and you'll defend the company you work for as long as you're employed, but the truth is, what verizon is telling you (which you are in return passing on to us) DOES NOT match up with what's happening.

It probably isn't available in your area since Verizon Wireless/Media Flo has stopped all coverage expansion of Mobile TV...because of the upcoming LTE release which will add V CAST Satellite Television to our line of services, offering more than 100 commonly watched tv channels. Depending on the price plan you choose to subscribe to it with...
But unfourtuneately, the Dare will not be LTE capable...LTE will not be released until 2009 on a trial basis and is Verizon's response to 4G services.
Also, not having Mobile TV in your area will not effect what is displayed in your menu.

I'm still perplexed as to what's going on with the patch notes vs the actual update.
I live in Vegas, so having the option available in a big city as this one should not be a problem.

Mobile TV has been in Vegas for months now...but that is determined by coverage...not the phone.

This is all so cool and fascinating to me, I don't have all that fancy premium stuff on my phone, I use it to talk, text, and photo swap. I don't mean to sound like the noob that I am, but what the hell is VVM? Looking forward to updates and added features, and since I don't subscribe, I have no problem just watching and waiting for what it to come.

well you must have the dare, so thats kinda fancy already
VVM is visual voice mail, lets you check your voice mail in txt form
so instead of "you have 3 new messages" you can SEE who called
and then choose to listen , delete , etc

There is a difference.
All the bugs people have been reporting may have been corrected.
I received more details from my Supervisor and she said it was called a Silent Update or something like that. This means it corrected more internal bugs and defects than anything else as well as slightly extended battery life.

Simply go into Settings & Tools then go down to phone information (info) then click on SW/HW version.
That should help...if not, let me know.

well... was it not you who posted several times that it would include such features as those? All I'm sayin is that you, who works for Verizon, told us these things. I, along with many others, got kinda excited for the update...expecting fixes. I'll be honest, i'm not impressed with this phone. I'm on my fifth Dare already. No offense, but i thought it was a lil odd that you posted about this update and what it would include when my business rep here in L.A. hadn't heard anything about it.

Update
99.9% of the information comes directly from Verizon Wireless, since I am directly at a call center/head corporation. I am also a tier 2 supervisor which increases my accuracy even more.
I will correct myself slightly since I received more details within the last 5 minutes from the marketing department in partnership with LG.
The original posting stating that it would add Mobile TV is incorrect. It revamped the Mobile TV Media Flo chip in the phone (with new data/info) so that in the future, an update could be available which would make Mobile TV available. Pretty much, it prepped it for a future Mobile TV update.
Also, it did the same thing to Visual Voicemail. This feature will be available via Over the Air update within the next 15 days. It now has the software capability.
This update, which has been verified, has corrected all bugs within Media Center, Mobile Web, and has reformatted the phone's antenna data to provide some mild antenna improvement which provides better call quality and coverage. It also extended battery life SLIGHTLY.

Holy crap, you guys have tiers? Freakin' sweet!
In all honesty, I regret getting the firmware update. My phone has been sucking really badly since then. The battery life has been cut in half, the music player somehow sounds worse, and the touch screen is not as responsive.
I'm not trying to look at all the negative, but this is just what I have noticed in comparison to before the update.
I'm extremely disappointed and am considering going to verizon to get this checked out or my phone replaced without the new firmware.
****Quick Edit****
The glitches in the media center have not been fixed. The music player is in the media center and it still cycles over the same songs.
The battery, as I mentioned, has been cut by almost half as far as life goes. No improvement. In fact, the second I turn on the camera / video I lose a bar.
Found a glitch with Best Buy site where the phone restarts whenever searching for something.
Frustration level: 8
Frustration limit: 10
Trend: .15 frustration every time I try to use phone.
Result if limit is reached: Vandalize VZW stores. Not really.

I got the firmware this weekend hoping it would address my bluetooth problem. So far so good. I no longer have the echo problem or a static problem. Previous to this weekend, callers heard echos whenever they talked to me when I used my headset. They also heard a ton of static. I'm using the Plantronics Voyager 520.
The touchscreen seems the same to me and I haven't played with the music player at all since I got the phone so I can comment on that.

It seems to me that people are only posting theyre problems because it would be pointless to post that everything is working okay. Well I updated and everything is working great for me. The update fixed my music player and bluetooth issues, so I am happy. I have had no issues with battery life and haven't had a restart since the update a few days ago. It is a worthwhile update in my opinion.

Just a thought...
Maybe people's battery life is lower than what is usually is because you are playing around with your phone more to find out what is fixed/different/better?

The only difference thus far is taking 10 seconds to see if I had mobile TV or not.
Other than that, I'm using it the exact same way.
And I know T-Mobile isn't as good of a network as verizon, but the new google phone is pretty tempting.

V5 V4 fix lists
V5 Symptoms Resolved:
The "press here to unlock" prompt frequently seems to be drawn behind alerts that are received while locked, especially MMS or SMS notifications. The "press here" bar either can't be seen or is seen peeking out behind the alert, but cannot be pressed. The phone remains locked, and the side button may be used to unlocked it. The problem is the screen is missing the normal [Touch to Unlock] soft key and the [View Now] and [View Later] message soft keys. Fixed by changing the display status variable that is not affected by background applications.
The phone is not able to shuffle more than 250 songs when play all and shuffle are selected. Fixed to shuffle all songs.
V4 Symptoms Resolved:
Improvements in Bluetooth performance.
If a user sets a default home page of larger than 128 characters, device resets.
If the Master Volume is set to "Vibrate", voice message cannot be recorded on the phone.
Lists songs on a downloaded album in alphabetical order rather than the order they appear on album, changed to list in track order.
Songs which use the extended content description object info are not displayed correctly.
Intermittent issue - After selecting a Favoritethen touching phone symbol on bottom of string, the Favorite disappears from the screen and the phone does not initiate call. After pressing End key, then accessing Favorites again, the Favorite that disappearred now appears again, althought the icon has moved to a different spot on the screen, usually overlapping another Favorite.
When the screen lock is on and you plug a charging device into the phone the phone will beep acknowledging the connection, yet the battery strength indicator does not scroll or indicate it is charging. Once you unlock the screen the charge indicator changes and indicates the device is being charged. If you have a charging screen enabled the charge indicator will appear when the charging screen appears. Fixed to animate the battery bar correctly while charging on lock mode.
Slow response time on key presses was improved.
Video editing fails when an interruption (sms, mms, or alarm) occurs while saving.
rep points appreciated

But anyway, great detailed response.

Directly from a Verizon Wireless technician 5 minutes ago, call to confirm if in denial.
Version 4 & 5 released same day.
They fixed touch to unlock.
Fixed music issues.
Improved bluetooth performance.
Default homepage problem fixed,
Master volume sets to vibrate.
Lists songs on download album fixed to list to track order.
Object info on song is fixed.
After selecting fav and then touching phone symbol would disappear fav. Fav fixed.
Response time improved on touch screen.
Video recording is fixed if receiving pic, vid, or whatever.
Other things were also corrected.
More applications will also become available. The phone was originally released with no media center apps...but now it has some and will continue to grow.
No note of Mobile TV available, but it's coming.

What do you suggest I do, Nick? All the problems that were supposed to be fixed weren't on my phone. In fact, it created more problems.
